myrtle beach

mattie and erich had planned a trip to myrtle beach for a few days in may with my parents before we knew that we were going to be back east. lucky for us, my entourage and i were able to tag along!

we stayed at a beautiful hotel.  it had a ton of pools to choose from, and was right on the beach

i love the relationship mattie and mae have.  it takes mae a while to warm up to most people, but with mattie it is instantaneous.  they have so much fun together.

the hotel had a water slide, and mae had a blast going down!

this little girl is my sweet, happy baby.  where mae was stoic, this girl is smiley.  she has smiles for everyone.  she did great on the trip.  and definitely loves to be outside!

mae was in the pool pretty much the whole time.  and was in heaven with so many people to play with her.  of course, she got the runs while we were there...ugh, which of course brought on a wicked diaper rash. poor girl.  she handled it better than i did for sure!  i lost track of how many diapers i changed. let's just say swimmer diapers and diarrhea do not mix well.  but, she didn't let it slow her down!

maybe now that we're home, this little one will actually be able to nap in a crib instead of a bouncer seat or car seat.  but, naps on the beach are the best naps of all!

uncle erich is so fun.

sticker books with uncle erich. he's going to be an awesome daddy one day!

erich's song of choice to sing izzy to sleep..."soft kitty, warm kitty...."

we had such a great time.  i'm so glad that we were able to go see erich and mattie.  we miss them so much!  i'm even more glad that my brother married one of my best friends.

Beach Trip & The Wedding

the baldwin family had a little reunion before kasee and seth's wedding.  we were able to spend a few days at the outer banks together before we headed up to VA.  it was so much fun.  the outer banks is my happy place.  some of my best memories growing up were here.  i'm so glad that i was able to take my kids there, and see them (well, mostly mae) make sweet memories there as well.

there were kids all over the place, mae was in heaven.  she had so much fun with her cousins.  i'm so glad she's been able to develop friendships with them.  cousins make the best play mates, and friends.

my little beach babes.

we start them young around here! gram would be so proud

i love, love this guy.  i don't think i give enough shout outs to him.  he truly is an amazing person.

oh to be young and not care when you get sand in every crevice of your body.

ah yes, sharing a room with your kids really is a joy, am i right?  luckily we had a big enough bathroom that we were able to stick izzy in the pack n play in there.  and we made a super special bed for mae in the closet. she was so excited about it...go figure.

i love seeing mae play with her cousins.  and i love my nieces and nephews.

mae has never really given grandpa baldwin so much as a second glance.  but, this trip he became one of her favorite people. "where grandpa go? i want to see grandpa".  she has asked for him several times since we've been back.  it's so sweet.

these two love birds.  too cute.  it was so fun to get to know seth, and to see him and kasee together.  they are so great together.

is she a typical second child or what? naps and bottles on the beach, that sounds like the life to me.

we had a pinata for cinco de mayo.  mae was a little timid at first, but she finally took a swing or two towards the end.  when the pinata fell she was very concerned, it was sweet.  she's my gentle giant.

more fun with cousins.

total fail on my part to get more pictures of these two.  what a beautiful bride kasee was.  it was so wonderful to all be in the temple together, and to hear the amazing blessings that we are promised through eternal marriage.

joey was seriously the sweetest at the temple and reception.  she played with the little kids for hours!  mae was stuck to her like glue.  it was so fun.

The Big "Abenture"

we've been psyching ourselves up for our big trip across country for quite some time.  kasee set her wedding date for may, and cody and i decided that driving would most likely be the best option for us financially ( i say cody and i, but i really mean cody. if it were up to me i would have bought plane tickets direct from austin in a heart beat).  so anyways, we've been telling mae for a while that we were going on a big adventure.  for weeks she's been asking when we would leave on our big "abenture".  the whole time we were driving..."we going on abenture!!"

cody and i had been tossing around the idea that we should eventually get a bigger car.  (i say tossing around, what i mean is, i was basically saying "there's no way we can drive across country with all our crap in our car").  i loved my crv, and i eventually wanted a bigger car, but was perfectly content.  i knew it would be tight getting everything we would need for a month home in the car, but was willing to try.  one saturday cody took the car to see how much we could get for a trade-in. it turned out to be way more than we expected.  so he told me to come test drive some mini-vans.  i did.  but i just mentioned that i'd like to drive the honda pilot as well (my obtainable dream car).  he let me...boy was i surprised.  then he told me we could buy it...shock and surprise.  what?!? i was not emotionally prepared to get a car!  needless to say i drove home that day in a new ride.  and i absolutely love it.

on to the "abenture".  i spent weeks getting activities, books, toys, games, etc for mae for the drive. i seriously agonized over whether i had enough things to occupy every minute of time.  i made sure we had a ridiculous amount of healthy snacks.  what i didn't prepare for was a munchkin getting a double ear infection and a burst ear drum the day we left.
the day before we left mae seriously had a melt down to end all meltdowns.  she literally cried and screamed for 3 solid hours.  she would't tell me what was wrong.  so like any loving patient parent, i sent her to her room.  she finally calmed down and went to sleep. but was up a lot during the night.  the next day i planned to take her to the park and let her run around so she would be worn out when we started our trek.  we get to the park and i pull her hair back and see all of this blood and puss in her ear...super.  the doctor was double booked all day, so i couldn't get in for an appointment.  so we ended up at urgent care.  the blood and puss were from her ear drum bursting and then draining.  that was why she was screaming for 2 hours.  wow, epic parent fail or what?  luckily we were able to get her on some super meds before we left.

so we finally leave!  woohoo.  two tired sick babes in the car was no fun, nor is staying in sketchy hotels.  but we survived and made it all the way to west monroe the first night.  we of course had to do some duck dynasty sight seeing the next morning...

and made a delicious pit stop at the local donut shop

mae was in heaven

like i said, i seriously packed so many things for her to do.  and i felt like  we went through them all in like an hour.  this one is a matching game i put together.  girlfriend might not know her colors, but she knows her shapes.

i bought some gel clings for her to put on the window.  she had more fun putting them on her arms.

and we cut out and made fun glasses.
traveling with kids is not for the faint of heart.  it was hard.  but, we actually had a pretty good time.  i don't know if i'm ready to do it again any time soon.  and i will say the next time that i do, i will most certainly have a dvd player, but it was totally worth it.

more posts on our "abentures" on the east coast to come!!
